WOMEN IN HISTORY
I
get a little choked up every time I see the intro to "The
Mary Tyler Moore Show"—that image of Mary tossing
her hat in the air on a busy Minneapolis street while
Sonny Curtis croons "Love Is All Around" just gets me.
But why?
Am I identifying and sympathizing with a woman who,
against the odds, is determined to succeed? Or maybe I
subconsciously see her as an extension of Mrs. Petrie—
the charming wife and mother she played in the '60s on
"The Dick Van Dyke Show"—and wonder, "Hey, Laura,
what happened to Rob and Ritchie?" (her TV hubby and
son). Or is it simply a nostalgic reaction to a show that
I once loved watching with my mom? (Not the original
run…which was broadcast from 1970 to 1977. Together
we caught reruns on "Nick at Nite" during the '90s.)
Maybe my reaction is a combination of all three.
