N
orthern homes may feature porches and decks and patios,
but in Florida we have the fanciful lanai. Complete with
swimming oases, Tiki bars, water features, fire pits and
lounging areas, the lanai is a staple for gathering.
What truly sets apart Florida lanais, however, are the incredible
outdoor kitchens. Since the great weather makes it possible to enjoy
the outdoors year-round, equipping an outdoor kitchen with all the
trappings of its indoor equivalent makes perfect sense.
After floating in the pool or chatting fireside and enjoying a cocktail,
the day can include a full meal prepared completely outside. All the joys,
ease and convenience of a gourmet kitchen can be enjoyed outdoors. As
with an open floor plan indoors, which allows the cook to partake in
the festivities and conversation in the adjacent family room, so too the
outdoor kitchen allows the prep of the meal to take place right alongside
all the action. Bar seating serves a similar purpose—guests can keep the
chef company while still making the most of the surroundings, listening
to the trickle of a waterfall or the crackle of the fireplace.
