Ave Maria Oratory
Everglades City
As the western gateway to Everglades National Park,
Everglades City is a pure dream for those who live to
fish. Whether you're on the hunt for tarpon, snook or
redfish, this 2,400-square-mile patch of wilderness is an
ideal playground. And for those simply seeking a glimpse
of graceful egrets, eagles and roseate spoonbills, guided
tours ensure plenty of notewor thy photo oppor tunities.
Not to be missed is the Museum of the Everglades,
listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The
former Laundry Building now houses the museum and
commemorates the building of the Tamiami Trail through
the Everglades.
Immokalee
Immokalee means "My Home" in the Seminole
Indian language, and upon your first visit, it's easy to
see why it was so fondly named. The pine flatwoods,
oak hammocks and sawgrass that the CREW Marsh
Hiking Trails loop through are perfect examples of
the quiet, natural beauty of the area. Lovely Lake
Trafford is also known for excellent gator spotting,
bird watching and bass fishing.
Not to be missed is the Pepper Ranch Preserve,
where beautiful wildlife can be observed while hiking,
tent camping, mountain biking or even exploring the
trails on horseback.
Ave Maria
Home to Ave Maria University, this is Southwest
Florida's newest and fastest-growing town. Both the
town and the school were founded in 2005. The
quaint Town Center is the very hear t of Ave Maria,
which includes 100 winding miles of walking, biking
and nature trails, affording an amazing oppor tunity to
appreciate the native grasses and trees.
Not to be missed is the Ave Maria Oratory,
which is primarily the university chapel but also
serves the town. The stunning façade of the structure
dominates the piazza it graces and is reminiscent of
Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural style.
