Despite the fact that water is never too far away, pools have become hallmarks of most well-appointed Florida homes. An infinity or vanishing-edge pool can lend the rhythmic ambiance of falling water, and those properties blessed to be located on an incline have the option of installing transparent glass walls that reveal shimmering hues of turquoise and azure. Beauty can be found in the shallows as well. Baja ledges can incorporate chic chaise lounges, umbrella sleeves, and even a steady flow of bubbles (hot tub or no), and evening- centric elements, like LED lighting, create the illusion of a swimming space filled with multi-hued marine fireflies. The result is elegant, luxurious, and ultimately, relaxing. Trends evolve, and today's designers are nothing if not imaginative. Saltwater pools are found more frequently, especially with new construction, eliminating the need for chlorine. Another water treatment that has gained acclaim is UV treatment, in which ultraviolet light is incorporated to create clean, chemical-free waters that beg to be enjoyed. Often, the pool area is an extension of the home itself, so it's not too uncommon to find families gathered around the outdoor table at dinnertime. While the standard kitchen has come a long way over the decades, evolving from a utilitarian space to being a central component, many Florida homes don't just stop with the one: summer kitchens, complete with stoves, dedicated grills, refrigeration systems and wet bars, have come in vogue, ensuring that as much time can be spent in the great outdoors as possible—even when it comes to preparing a five-course meal. Taking a note from the charm of the old country, Tuscan-inspired firepits have become fixtures in recent years. These warm gathering spaces evoke the ambiance of a campfire, with a sensibility for streamlined elegance (and thanks to protective rims, safety for the whole family). The design of firepits has evolved into sculptural masterpeices. HILLMA N HOMES | F E A T U R E
