M
edicine has been a challenging, yet tremendously rewarding career for
women for centuries. As healers, midwives and nurses, women have
often carried the burden of healthcare for their families and communities.
Whether they have had a controlling position is another story. Over the
past three decades, the ladies turned the tables forging to the forefront of
medicine by entering doctorate programs in droves, climbing the healthcare
ladders.
The road to leadership in medicine is intensely competitive. Women have
tolerated the boys club mentality and preferential treatment among male
colleagues and mentors. The grueling hours and cutthroat environment in
residency programs have changed, as restrictions were placed on today's
up-and-coming medical students. At a time when the future of medicine
is under a fundamental metamorphosis, women are a critical piece of
the puzzle, taking up seats as top hospital administrators, as cutting-edge
researchers and as advanced specialists in their field.
GRAVITAS magazine sat down with some of the top female physicians and
healthcare leaders in the Tampa Bay and Sarasota areas who are making a
difference in the lives of their patients and the next generation of female
doctors. We asked them to share their personal and professional successes
as well as challenges and lessons learned along the way.
