GRAVITAS MAGAZINE GravitasMag.com | 23 MEDICINE Malaria Vaccine e results of the clinical trials of the first viable malaria vaccine are in, and they show great promise. e vaccine, called RTS,S was developed over two decades by GlaxoSmithKline and funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. It offers partial protection against malaria for up to four years. Designed for children in African countries, this vaccine could help prevent the nearly 1,300 child deaths that occur in sub- Saharan Africa every day from the parasitic disease. If approved by the World Health Organization, the RTS,S could be made available for use as early as October. Malaria is present in over 100 countries and kills more than 660,000 people every year, threatening half of world's overall population. is vaccine marks a significant scientific milestone as the first to reach clinical trials with some success. HEALTH Coffee Time Yes, there really is a good time to drink coffee. A recent video released by AsapSCIENCE revealed that drinking a cup of coffee right when you wake up does little to maximize our alertness and energy levels. Cortisol, also known as the stress hormone, regulates our internal clock or our circadian rhythm. is hormone is what causes us to feel more awake. Between 8 and 9 a.m., cortisol levels peak, which is why we naturally wake up at this time. Drinking caffeinated drinks during this peak actually hinders your alertness in the long run. is is due to the fact that your body becomes used to these high levels making your caffeine buzz less effective. erefore, when your cortisol decreases, it is followed by a severe lack of energy. Drinking your coffee after your cortisol peak at 9:00 a.m. will prove to be more beneficial. Cortisol also peaks between 12 and 1 p.m. and between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. so it is best to drink between these times. For those who have to rise very early, scientists say to wait at least an hour before grabbing the joe in order to experience its full effect. "Ninety-three percent of popular films were directed by men, and only 80% were written by them," states a video released by the #MakeItFair project, a campaign created in order to bring attention to the gender inequality that has plagued Hollywood since its inception. is is the first video put out by the group, which features more than 70 women artists and is produced by an all-female production team. e video, heavily laden with sarcasm, has women bemoaning the "lack" of representation that men receive in filmmaking including 70% of speaking roles and only 88% of box office hits feature a man in the leading role. ere is even a protest song where the women sing, "We won't relent until it's 100% … It's only fair that men should have it all." ENTERTAINMENT #MakeItFair Campaign Researchers discovered a 3.5 million year-old jawbone in Ethiopia that is believed to belong to a new species of hominin. ough there were other ancient humans that existed contemporary to the jawbone, lead researcher Dr. Yohannes Haile-Selassie explained to BBC News that, after a comparison of other jawbones discovered at the time, this could be a new species. "We had to look at the detailed anatomy and morphology of the teeth and the upper and lower jaws, and we found major differences," the researcher said. "is new species has very robust jaws. In addition, we see this new species had smaller teeth. e canine is really small— smaller than all known hominins we have documented in the past." e new species is named Australopithecus deyiremeda.
