16 | GRAVITAS MAGAZINE GravitasMag.com Loretta Lynch First African-American Woman Attorney General LAW ENTERTAINMENT Meryl Streep Actress Zhou Qunfei is the leader of Lens Technology, a touch-screen manufacturer with a customer list that includes Samsung and Apple. Starting out as a low-wage factory worker, Qunfei now oversees a workforce of 60,000. After going public on China's Shenzhen Stock Exchange on March 18, the company's share price quickly rose by more than 300% earning Qunfei the titles of richest woman in the global tech field and richest self-made woman. She is currently worth an estimated $10.2 billion. With her technology featured on the Apple Watch introduced in April, that number is only expected to grow. WOMEN IN THE NEWS - INTERNATIONAL Women continue to break down barriers and pave the way for the next generation of female leaders, from the arts community to philanthropy to the corporate boardroom. Here is a look at five women making international headlines for their groundbreaking efforts. ree-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep is funding a screenwriter's lab specifically for women over 40. Penned Writer's Lab, the mission is to "provide opportunities for females over the age of 40," as those opportunities have proved to be very hard to find. Plans for the lab were unveiled at the Tribeca Film Festival, where Streep's involvement also was announced. In April, Streep participated in a panel called "Story Powers: ree Great Women in Film," where she shared her thoughts on women having a much harder time breaking into the film industry than their male counterparts. Star-studded producers and writers have already signed on as mentors with the program, including Caroline Kaplan of "Boyhood" and Kirsten Smith of "Legally Blonde." Zhou Qunfei World's Richest Self-Made Woman BUSINESS As the first African-American woman to be elected to the position of Attorney General, Loretta Lynch is breaking down barriers. Lynch, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, was confirmed to the position of Attorney General in April by a 56 to 43 vote. Republicans have been longing to replace former Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. for months. While they agreed that Lynch was qualified for the position, they opposed her nomination because of her support of President Obama's executive actions on immigration. In the end her confirmation process took more than five months, longer than most nominees. Surprisingly in the end, Lynch received 10 Republican votes. "She has earned this respect," said Senator Patrick J. Leahy of Vermont. "Her story is one of perseverance, of grace and grit."
