This year's Renaissance Luncheon will celebrate the
Women's Resource Center of Sarasota County's 35th
anniversary of providing a legacy of service and will feature
an inspiring and empowering guest speaker — Ericka
Dunlap, a former Miss America who has a foundation that
invests in the lives of young women.
Betty Schoenbaum will be honored as "Renaissance
Woman of the Year," in appreciation for her years
of dedication and ongoing support to the Women's
Resource Center's mission. Her generosity and legacy of
giving to our community is remarkable. Teri Hansen of the
Gulf Coast Community Foundation will present the award
and touch on women in philanthropy making a difference
in our community.
Ericka Dunlap captured a par t of history by
becoming the first —and only to date—
black woman to be crowned Miss Florida
in the 80-year history of the pageant.
She went on to capture America's most
coveted crown as Miss America 2004.
As Miss America, Dunlap traveled over
25,000 miles a month, serving as a keynote
speaker and goodwill ambassador to
corporations, universities, and communities
promoting her platform of "United We
Stand, Divided We Fall Behind." She also
traveled to Afghanistan, Kuwait and Qatar
to boost morale for U.S. servicemen and
women. Today, she serves as founder
and president of her non-profit, The
Crown Jewel Foundation, Inc., investing
in the lives of young girls and women,
and is Principal Consultant of Crown
Communication Group, a public relations
and enter tainment consulting firm.
