oan Morgan, is the owner and
creative inspiration behind the
ver y upscale women's boutique Dream
Weaver Collection on St A rmands Circle.
Contrar y to what some might think, she
does not spend her weekends purusing
high fashion magazines. Instead, Joan can
be found waterside.
Joan's love of the water dates back to
childhood but, it is her love of coastal
towns that led her to move to Sarasota
from Nantucket 30 years ago. From
fishing in the bay with her son, and now
her grandchildren, to hanging on the
sandbar with friends, most weekends you
can find her in Sarasota Bay.
While she has owned a boat for most of
her adult life, two years ago she stepped
up her game when she purchased a
330 Silverton motor yacht, her "floating
condo," she calls it. She admits that at first
she was ner vous when it came time to
head for the docks, but now she's a pro as
she backs into her snug slip at the Sarasota
Yacht Club.
Her first mates are of the four-legged
variety. Marley and Buzz, her constant
companions, who long ago earned their
sea legs. ey love the open sea as much
as Joan.
Not one to bale Mother Nature, Joan
readily admits she's a fair weather boater
and keeps her weather eye open to the sky.
"I prefer calm waters and sunny days. If a
storm comes up, I run for cover," she says.
She has been a member of the Sarasota
Yacht Club for years and says she enjoys
the camaraderie of boating clubs. "It's
nice to be a part
of a big family of
boaters. We have
dock parties and
barbecues, and we
have reciprocals
with other yacht
clubs so it gives
us a string of
destinations to visit.
A nd, when you get
into bigger boats, it's
nice to have someone watching your back,
if you run into trouble."
A nd as the cr ystal blue-green waters of the
gulf beckon, you can be sure that Joan will
answer the call of the open sea for her next
seafaring adventure with her mates.
