South Seas Island Resor t , an iconic 330-acre wildlife preserve spanning two and a half miles of pristine white- sand beaches. 54 | FLORIDA HOMES MAGAZINE T The myster y of Captiva hangs loosely around the island like a silk scarf on the shoulders of a beautiful woman. Whether or not you believe the stories of pirate occupation and buried treasures to be true, Captiva has its own chest of valuables in the unbeatable weather, white sand and teal blue sea. Connected to larger Sanibel Island, this sister destination is no less alluring with its rustic sunsets and porcelain quality sea shells. North Captiva, at the tip of the island, has vacation rental properties and relax ing resorts for its visitors. It's accessible by ferr y, private boat or small plane with no paved roads on the island—travel by golf cart or bicycle is preferred. Vacation homes offer accommodations for larger families, with beautiful million dollar waterfront properties that are a short walk to the beach. Part of North Captiva's appeal is that it is a state protected area that will never be commercially developed. As with Sanibel, Captiva doesn't have ver y many big name hotels. Charming boutique resorts personalize ever ything about the island. Neighborhood pubs replace fast food chains and local dining specializes in, of course, fresh seafood. The scenic landscape gives Captiva a true, island village feel. Its sub-tropical climate with nearly perfect weather year-round, keeps the island decorated with exotic flowers and recently, Captiva expanded its beach front with off-shore sand. If you're interested in a lively evening , a flourishing arts scene awaits you in nearby Fort Meyers. Dinner theatres, music festivals and Broadway caliber shows all abound. Captiva Island is the perfect remote place for a wedding , honeymoon or romantic weekend getaway. WHERE TO EAT Be sure to visit The Bubble Room a colorful souvenir shop, restaurant and desser t stop. The multi- themed restaurant has oversized desser ts like red velvet cake. WHAT TO DO Captiva Island is world famous for its shelling and fishing. Visit Jensen's Marina and rent a boat for the day or try island hopping by water taxi. PLACES TO STAY The South Seas Island Resor t is an island favorite. Beachfront villas and cottages are available with breathtaking views of the water with poolside cabanas. CAPTIVA ISLAND D est inat ion
