e dawn of the new millennium marked the beginning of a
second golden age for St. Petersburg. e city boldly stepped
into the 21st centur y with a commitment to revitalize it's
downtown core. Municipal leaders and business owners joined
forces resulting in an impressive renaissance that now stands
as a playbook for other municipalities to follow. R ick Baker,
former Mayor of St. Petersburg 2001-2010, says his approach
to revitalizing Downtown St. Petersburg was based on the
premise that "there would be so much going on Downtown
that people will come, even if… they have nothing particular in
mind what they want to do, confident that they can simply come
Downtown and pick from a variety of activities once they get
there."
e community also made a dedicated effort to aract artists
from all over the countr y to live and "Work Where A rt is Made."
ey offered reduced housing and studio incentives to artists. As
a result, the art community in St Petersburg is one of the most
prolific and cohesive in the countr y. Just east of downtown the
Warehouse A rts District is comprised of once abandoned older
buildings that now provide the perfect environment for artists
who need space for equipment, studios, galleries and special
events.
e overall impact of the renaissance of downtown St
Petersburg is profound: more than 900 events bring over 10
million people each year to the sunshine city to experience yacht
races, triathlons, baseball, basketball, cycling , cultural ex hibits,
and music. e downtown waterfront is lined with historic
architecture, boutiques and outdoor dining cafes. e city easily
aracts tourists to its cultural district that consists of seven
museums including the world-class Salvador Dali Museum, a
state university, ten marine institutes and more
than two dozen art galleries. Historic
neighborhoods continue to be restored,
as residents invest in their communities
with a great source of pride.
