Extra Features and Video Online FloristsReview.com R E A D O N L I N E 59 • Purchasing Outlets/Venues: As to where Purchasers bought houseplants, 2019 results showed that 66% sought out Home-improvement Stores, 64% purchased at Garden Centers, 51% at Supermarket Florists, 34% each at Independent Florists and Farmers Markets, 26% at Wholesale Stores, 25% at Super-discount Stores and 19% through a Wire Service. e numbers were wildly different in 2021. Home-improvement Stores and Garden Centers were still top venues for houseplant purchases in 2021, at 30% and 29%, respectively. In third place (and with a lower percentage than in 2019) were Super- discount Stores, at 22%. Purchasing at Supermarket Florists dropped to 17%. Coming in at 10% each were Independent Florists, Farmers Markets, Wholesale Stores and Online sites (which were either not an option in the 2019 survey or zero percent responded making purchases through one). • Motivating Factors for Purchasers: In the 2019 survey, Price was the top motivating factor, with 63.3% of Purchasers citing this reason. A Convenient Location was the second-most important reason, with 57.2% of Purchasers citing it. In the 2021 survey, those two factors flipped in importance: A Convenient Location was the No. 1 motivating factor, at 28.7%, and Price was the second-most-motivating factor for 26.1% of Purchasers. In both the 2019 and 2021 surveys, Product Selection was No. 3, at 55.6% in the 2019 survey and 25.8% in the 2021 survey ; Quality Products was No. 4, at 48.5% in 2019 and 22.1% in 2021; Customer Service was fifth- most-motivating factor for 19.2% of Purchasers in 2019 and for 13.2% in 2021; and, at No. 6 was Unique Product Offerings, for 31.0% of Purchasers in 2019 and for 11.8% of Purchasers in 2021. • Reasons/Occasions for Giving Houseplants as Gifts: e reasons Purchasers gave houseplants as gifts shifted quite a bit from the 2019 survey to the 2021 survey. For instance, in the Get Well category, 75.1% reported purchasing houseplants for this reason/occasion in 2021 compared to only 12% in 2019. Other top reasons/occasions cited by Purchasers in the 2021 survey include Just Because, Birthday, Anniversary, Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, Christmas and Easter. TAKEAWAY Consumers are six times more likely to give houseplants as Get Well gifts today.
