Floral design, photos and text by Nita Robertson, AIFD, CFD Both orchid plants and terrariums are wildly popular, so why not combine the two to create highly desirable gifts for any occasion or holiday, as well as for event décor. ORCHIDS UNDER GLASS piphytic orchids, like Phalaenopsis ( featured in this design), Cattleya, Cymbidium, Dendrobium, Mokara, Oncidium, Paphiopedilum, Vanda and many others, grow nonparasitically on other plants—typically on tree branches and trunks in tropical rain forests. ey do not need soil, and they thrive having their roots exposed. All parts of these plants derive neces- sary moisture and nutrients from the air, rain, water and/or debris around them. All of these characteristics make them perfect for terrariums, cloches, Wardian cases and other glass enclosures. I wanted to create a terrarium depicting nature by showcasing the orchids' beautiful textural roots as well as their exotic blooms. is long-lasting trend-forward design is ideal for virtually any occasion and makes dramatic décor for events, especially when used in multiples and accessorized with smaller vase arrangements, votive candles, rocks, branches and/or myriad other theme-related items.
