Extra Features and Video Online FloristsReview.com R E A D O N L I N E 39 Materials Step-By-Step Step 1 Design the bouquet using the spiral hand-tying method. Incorporate larger fl owers fi rst—Dahlia and roses, in this case; this will create volume and allow you to subsequently layer in the other botanicals. Don't remove all foliage from the fl ower stems; the foliage is important in creating a natural look. Grip the stems loosely at fi rst, crisscrossing them as you arrange the botanicals into the bouquet. Adjust/tighten your grip as you add more materials. Keep your fi ngers encircled around the stems about 5 inches below the blooms; this will allow for a wider and more horizontal design. This intersection of crisscrossed stems will be the binding point for tying the bouquet. Step 2 Incorporate unusual and distinctive botanicals, such as chestnut branches and Asclepias, into the bouquet to establish the shape and dimension of the design. Once you have added these botanicals, use them as guidelines for shape and size as you complete the design. Next, arrange smaller accent fl owers, such as the billy buttons, Gomphrena, drumstick Allium and Tweedia, throughout the bouquet to create dimensional layers in the design, add pops of color and create movement. Add foliage in, as desired. Step 3 Wrap the stems at the binding point with paper-covered wire, waterproof tape, stem wrap or other self-fusing binding tape, or raffi a. Allow the bouquet to maintain its width. Step 4 Cut stem ends to equal lengths, to create a fl at base. If the bouquet is constructed properly, with the stems crisscrossed correctly and the materials physically balanced, the bouquet should stand on its own.
