SWAMP SANCTUARY
This sanctuary, managed by the
National Audubon Society, is
where you can find the rarest of
orchids, the largest old-growth Bald
Cypress forest on the continent
and the largest nesting site for the
endangered wood stork. As you
navigate your way along a 2.25-mile
boardwalk through the pinelands
and over cypress ponds, watch
for deer, otters and other critters
sheltered by the towering, moss-
laden trees.
IN THE KNOW
Take a copy of the sanctuary's
Boardwalk Bird List on your nature
expedition and track how many
exotic species you can spot. From
buntings to warblers, the wetlands
and marshes are flush with winged
wonders.

or your own two feet.
